The Secret World is an mmo that is not only set in the real world of earth, albeit in the midst of combat between the Illuminati, Templars and Dragons, but also a game unique leveling experience. Registrations for beta testing have begun, with a prize draw included as an incentive. Successful applicants will not just get to play the game but also stand the chance of receiving exclusive in game items or winning the chance to visit developer Funcoms own studios in Montreal. The Secret World has been in development for a long time now, initially generating interest through a personality test for the games three warring factions based on popular social networks and a stirring trailer.
The story of Secret World revolves around the simple core idea that every legendary creature you’ve ever heard of is real and waging a nightmarish war with the human world. In this war the three factions of the Illuminati, Templars and Dragons all have their own goals and motivations for battling back against these hidden dangers. This new first phase of “The Secret War” asks users to choose their faction before registering and bind their new account to their facebook. In the trailer for this so called first phase a world map sees the factions go against one another for domination of the world which may suggest the format of this games next social stage, not unlike Fable 3′s recent geotagging revolution game which allowed participants to gain in game rewards.
What truly sets The Secret world apart for other MMORPG’s is its progression system. From the very beginning of the game you are able to progress through the story line and missions how ever you wish, not limited by levels or classes instead relying upon gaining influence within the secret societies each faction is based upon. While there will already be a range of weapons and powers available to your character, performing tasks for these organisations will earn you even more powers, weapons, and even unique uniforms, and, of course, access to untold secrets.
While The Secret World is an original concept that tries to break the mould of modern RPG gaming time, and a significant amount of beta testing, will tell whether these ideas will prove game changing or simply a curiosity.

I recently stumbled upon the Dead Frontier. In this day and age mmorpgs are nothing new. Neither are their free to play equivalents. In fact not a day goes by that I don’t notice another sword and sorcery game with guilds and monsters. Dead Frontier seems to be a different take on the online gaming genre on multiple fronts. The game is a relatively modern ‘real world’ title that runs in your browser where you and a handful of survivors fight back the never ending tide of the zombie horde. The graphics run in a top down semi 3D style not too dissimilar to Konami’s Zombie Apocalypse shooter. A new trailer has been recently released to showcase the latest update to its graphics and multiplayer capabilities.

The game is simple enough to grasp but difficult to master and survive alone.

Combat is harsh on the cold streets of the Dead Frontier

This game makes use of its multiplayer element in order to help you survive the waves of increasingly powerful undead. but appears to make use of a simple shoot an run tactic for the majority of its gameplay. Again, like Konami’s game, the Dead Frontier looks like a fun place to let off some steam, but its replay value is more for the casual gamer.

The epic opening cinematic depicting the return of the corrupted dragon aspect Deathwing to the fantasy world of Azeroth has recently been released online. The three minute long computer generated short is set to be the first thing mmo gamers see after installing the new World Of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm early this December. The new expansion sees the entire gaming world reshaped by the earth shattering titular cataclysm in the wake of the dragon Deathwing’s escape from its elemental prison. With the wealth of coverage gaming blogs, podcasts and videos published by beta testers, such as the Cynical Brit on Youtube, the changes in the game are hardly new news but the video gives us a peek at the glorious destruction as it happens.
The expansion and it’s special edition version will be available for purchase globally December 7th.
