Following the great tradition of the ‘double-dipped’ release industrial icons KMFDM return with Krieg. Krieg features remixes from last years Blitz release with artists like Combichrist and Pop Will Eat itself taking their hand to the ever consistent durm und strang stylings of Sacha, Lucia and co.
Blitz saw the return of wayward KMFDM member Tim Skold and a duet with Cheryl Wilson for core KMFDM member Lucia on the catwalk groove track Strut as well as usual KMFDM style and humor you’d expect from the militaristic electro rock troupe.
The Blitz and Krieg albums are not quite interchangable, with Krieg acting as more a companion EP than a full blown album As with any KMFDM remix album, Ruck Zuck for instance, you get several versions of one track, in this case at 3 versions of Never Say Never by a respectable fraternity of acts including Komor Komando and Dave ‘Rave’ Ogilvie.
Sebastian Komor brings his typical stomp and deathly mixed vocals to the track which unmixed has the same surge seen in KMFDM’s World War III, with apocalyptic 8bit style bleeps. From this benchmark of club friendly dancefloor breakdown mixes we turn to the Disco Balls mix of Strut and see a song that already had a catwalk vibe to it turn into sheer camp.
KMFDM remix albums are always mixed bag, but often and thankfully in this case, they’re a bag of tasty musical treats.
just a fleeting listen of Dave Ogilvie’s Candy Apple Mix of Never Say Never greets you with a panpipe tooting track reminiscent of a Sonic the Hedgehog level. That being said, if you can’t stand KMFDM when they’re being stompy and serious, you’re probably not going to enjoy them at their most aloof and comical or dark and destructive. This is KMFDM albeit in many shades and colours. All of which seem to shine in these two releases.
Blitz was released in 2009 and Krieg in April 2010. Both are available for download and purchase in a variety of formats.
