Marvel Comics have released the first official images from its secretive new production Thor, which is set for a tentative world wide 6 May 2011 release date.
Following a number of leaked images of a suit of armor (which were removed following cease and desist orders) fans have suggested are of villain The Destroyer marvel has released high quality images of Chris Hemsworth as the titular character Thor.
Hemsworth heads up an all star cast with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s adoptive brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.
The bill does not end there. Academy Award winning actor Anthony Hopkins is cast in the role of Odin, Thor’s father; with his fellow Norsemen turning up in the shape of Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif and Idris Elba as Heimdall
The epic adventure of Thor is to span the entire Marvel Universe from present day Earth or Midgard to the realm of Asgard. Thor is a powerful but arrogant warrior who is exiled to Earth to learn humility as a human and what it truly means to be a hero as he battles back the dark invading forces from Asgard.
The image shows roughly what to expect from the costume design, and to be honest, is relatively faithful to the comicbook designs next years release date comes just a few months before the release of The First Avenger: Captain America on 22 July 2011, followed a whole year later by the crossover superhero spectacle that could make or break the current spate of Marvel movies, The Avengers.
What remains to be seen is if all of this production lives up to the quality of one piece of armor or if the clamouring world of comicbook fandom accepts what they see.
