See how far the rabbit hole goes.

See how far the rabbit hole goes.

The trailer for Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland shows its still a world where logic and proportion mean nothing at all. But there is still one question on everyone’s lips; is it worth looking down the rabbit hole, or would you be as mad as a hatter to see it?
Over the past few weeks images have trickled out giving an impression of what this world is going to look like but the trailer takes things up a notch when you see it in motion. The Tweedles, egg shaped twins looked far less impressive as photos than in the world of Wonderland depicted in the trailer, yet it remains to see whether the film is accurate, compelling and entertaining.
The cast alone is enticing with Johnny Depp’s pale faced bewigged hatter, a Steven Fry voiced Cheshire cat and Matt Lucas performing as the aforementioned Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum topped up with many more big names such as Alan Rickman, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter. Among all these established stars, relative newcomer Mia Wasikowska takes the place of the titular Alice.
What I’m sure has struck you about this casting choice is that this Alice is a little older, and as such is probably a sign that the narrative will take a slightly different turn to the previous animated effort from disney many moons ago. Early speculation on the screenshots and cast listing released prior to the trailer suggest that this adaptation is made up of elements from both Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass or perhaps something altogether different in the vein of American Mcgee’s Alice. Though one look at the colour pallet of the trailer says the latter is quite unlikely.

The Trailer is also the first look at the Cheshire cat, which is to be voiced by the perfectly chosen Stephen Fry. The fleeting glimpse of this CGI kitty does seem glaringly artificial at this point but time will tell if this is what we’ll eventually see given my initial apprehension about the character effects used on Matt Lucas. Another fantastically cast voice in this film is that of Alan Rickman, Who is currently purported to be in the role of the hookah smoking Caterpillar  with the fierce Christopher Lee and The underused Crispin Glover as the Jabberwock and Knave of Hearts respectively rounding off the major names in this work.

The peculiar mannerisms of Depp return, even if they are slightly more restrained than his outings as Captain Jack Sparrow and the excessively sugared up Willy Wonka. Depp’s latest stab at being british comes across as eccentrically upper-class, which as one knows is a necessity for a tea party. That and putting out your little finger when you lift the cup… What seems like a just-crazy-enough performance could be taken off the rails by not fault of his own by the decision to Screen this movie in 3D. Even the best of scenes can be destroyed by random crap flying towards your face just to show off the “eye popping technology”.

The hyper-real and glorious colour of this work has got me giddy for more but That very important date won’t roll around untill next march
