The “Metalocalypse” television series, created by Brendon Small (“Home Movies”) and Tommy Blacha (“Da Ali G Show”), launched in 2006 and has reached its third season on Adult Swim statestide, with a trickle of episodes seen on Bravo’s Adult swim block in ol’ blighty. As one of the most popular series on the cable network watched by more than five million 18-34 year-old viewers, the show portrays DETHKLOK as a metal band with unheard-of popularity, even ranking them as the seventh-largest economy on earth. In 2007, DETHKLOK broke the fourth wall and threatened the world economy with the CD release of “The Dethalbum”. The album featured of full-length songs usually only partially heard during the show’s episodes, taking show fans and metal head audiences alike by storm and has bizarrely successful. Featuring an amazing assortment of metal musicians  ”The Dethalbum” sold amazingly fast with more than 34,000 copies in its first week, the album became the highest charting death metal album ever before going on to sell more than 300,000 copies to date.

In addition to the second release the merchandising machine is going insane with a number of products wing their way to you soon including an authentic guitar TAB songbook released in spring featuring  all 15 regular tracks plus the hidden “Metalocalypse” theme song in authentic guitar TAB transcriptions approved by the show’s guitarist, composer, and creator, Brendon Small. Each songbook includes a free DVD, featuring a lesson from Brendon Small on how to play the theme song and an animated guitar lesson by the fastest guitar player alive, DETHKLOK’s own Skwisgaar Skwigelf.

DETH FIGURES

Dethfigures; now with added Murderface!

Other oncoming products include the limited edition Dethklok Action figures, limited to a run of 500, and even more awesome: a Metalocalypse video game The game, which was to be announced at San Diego Comic Con last week is set firmly in the world of the show, good news considering creator Brendan Small was involved in the project. the show’s creator, worked with Konami to produce “Metalocalypse: Dethgame” as a downloadable title for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3.

In addition to extending plot of the show, the game follows a band of roadies or Klokateers, who will be charged with the task of protecting the band and their own mega-mansion, Mordhaus, from ‘rabid mutant fans.’ There will also be mini-games.” Which leaves the opportunity for series favourites like Dr. Rockso to appear as some sort of boss-type mutant, or perhaps Mustakracish the giant troll. Songs like “Briefcase Full of Guts will also serve as a back drop for the game, which, given the ridiculously gory reputation of the show would seem likely to provide similar game play.

It would seem like the brooding bandmates of the fictional band would be the perfect candidates for a raucous, fighting videogame. But despite its heavy metal façade, Dethklok was not easy to import into a videogame setting. “The first idea was we make the band merciless and murderous but that doesn’t work on the show,” says Small. “Our show is really about five narcissistic super-celebrities who can’t open the door by themselves. ”Mr. Small sees inspiration in designer Philippe Starck’s manifold projects for his work in several different mediums. “He’ll design an iPod or a toothbrush or a motorcycle, but there’s a methodology there that’s consistent and recognizable. That’s what makes him a good designer.”
Although a release date hasn’t been attached to the game yet, there’s another heavy metal game hitting the market this year. Activision’s “Brutal Legend,” created by Tim Schafer and featuring the voice of Jack Black, is scheduled to be released this October.  Small doesn’t see this as competition, Just as a sign of an oncoming METALOCALYPSE!
While we don’t currently have any screen caps of this new game we do however have a link to something equally as badass and console inspired: I present to you 8bit Dethklok!
