Things that play on my mind….. no pun intended.

After paying a most recent visit to Heartbreak City with a small drop off at Desolation Point (yeah..i got dumped), ive been relying rather heavily on music to pass away the points where it is socially acceptable to drink alcohol. I’ve developed a few favourites which have got me through this, and would like to share 5 of them with you….

1. VAST; “Free”, taken from their “Music For People” album, not sure if this song was intended to be a song aimed at the person who shat on your heart but the immortal line “You can’t tell me what to do anymore, now i’m free” rings true so heavily when going through the resentful cycle of the break up process.

2. Marilyn Manson; “Putting Holes In Happiness” is a much underrated song from a very underrated album. Full of witty Mansonisms: “The grass is greener here i can see all of your snakes”, and “I should have picked the photograph it lasted longer than you”, are great lines written from a man going through a break up with a (probably) much more attractive girl than the one you broke up with. So cheer up!

3. Mudvayne: “Same Ol’” is a great song off their new album, and is a song that you could not possibly feel down listening to. Having a Pantera-esque quality mixed with a punk attitude is something only certain bands can get away with, and Chad Grey’s brutal snarl of “WHAT? SO WHAT!” is enough to headbang the lady blues away.

4. All American Rejects “Gives You Hell” (dont fucking pidgeonhole me, people do silly things when in a break up!) is possibly the most immature break up song you could hope for. Lyrics printed here for your amusement, fantastic.

5.NIN “Something I can never have” is a song i probably shouldn’t have listened to during my break up, as the resentful cycle fades away and the demure cycle begins. Capturing unrequited love in lyrical form very perfectly, this song has just enough bile hidden inside it to make it angry. Which i fucking love.

I havent been able to play the album “Disintegration” by The Cure yet, however i did enjoy listening to “Without You” by Harry Nillson. Turns out all the best music is about heartbreak! Yippee!
