Necromag likes to share it’s personal musical quirks and nuances with you on a regular basis, and this is a mini profile of dark ambient music pioneer Lustmord. If you’re a Tool fan you will have probably heard Lustmord on their last CD “10,000 Days”, providing the sound effects of rain and thunder on the title track. He also collaborated most recently on Tool mainman Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer side project. So who is Lustmord? Well, the name itself means “Lust Murder” in German, the man behind it is a British musician living in Los Angeles, and his music is, well, hard to describe. Name checked by everyone for the sake of credibility, Lustmord has a tendency to work his dark musical magic with whomever he is interested in. Interestingly, despite his atheist world views, he performed for the Church of Satan on the 6th of June 2006 (yes you get it) and the CD was released of the performance, titled “Rising.”
So what is dark ambient? Well firstly, you need to understand that not all music requires melody and beats. Music can be made without instruments, the only requirement is sound. And Lustmord is a master of sound. He has captured recordings made in caves, fields and slaughterhouses, combined them with ritualistic chants, sometimes using keyboard synth to create an atmosphere. This leads to very beautiful, yet scary as hell music. On first listen you would be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled into a room full of people in black robes about to sacrifice a baby to some..thing…
This is not music to dance to. This is music to get lost to. Those of you who meditate might find these soundscapes relaxing and soothing. Others will not feel the same way.
When you experience music that is very different to just about everything in your CD collection, you definately look at music in a different light. Lustmord is dark, ambient and very very heavy. Not is a “Heavy Metal” type of heavy, but emotionally heavy. Played loud on your Ipod, the music of Lustmord brings the inner darkness of the human mind to you, and I highly recommend listening to “Zoetrope” and “Metavoid”, probably the most accessible of his works.
Necromag provides you with Mr Lustmord’s details for you to check out at your discretion. HERE is his official Myspace, HERE is his official website and HERE you can find some more information on this artist.
